Historic Downtown Adairsville
Celebrating Adairsville's Past, Present and Future. Sponsored by Adairsville's Downtown Development Authority.
Activities include:
Monday - May 12, 7 p.m. at Adairsville City Hall - Gary Greene, The Great Imagineer. This well-known storyteller, songwriter and musician from Rome is a tour guide at New Echota State Historic Site in Calhoun. He will tell stories and perform songs that he has gathered from his early childhood experiences, as well as historical Cherokee stories, myths and Appalachian folktales. Greene's CD will also be available for purchase for $10 each.
Tuesday - May 13, 7 p.m. at Adairsville City Hall - Kanhiski - The Storyteller. Jerri Holloway, historian and curator of the museum housed in the Adairsville Depot, will tell traditional Cherokee legends in period costume.
Wednesday - May 14 - Lunch & Learn 11:30 a.m. at the Sans Souci Clubhouse - Margie Hufstetler of Adairsville, a noted and talented basket weaver, will conduct a basket-weaving class. Participants will be able to weave their own baskets. There will be a small fee for materials. Lunch will be served. Reservations must be made by May 12 - call Linda Bass, 770-773-3281.
Thursday - May 15 - History of the Dixie Highway - 7 p.m. at Adairsville Depot. Abbie Tucker Parks, co-author of the book "North Georgia's Dixie Highway" published in 2007, will speak about the book and the history of the Dixie Highway, the first interstate highway to link the American South with the urban North. Mrs. Parks will speak about the rise of tourism, businesses, and the chenille industry along the route, which ran right through the middle of Adairsville. There will also be copies of the 200-page pictorial book available for purchase for $20 each.
Friday - May 16 - Enjoy an outdoor concert from 7-9 p.m. in downtown. Adairsville's own Outback Band will perform their brand of music which includes country, Southern rock, and blues classics.
Saturday - May 17 - Adairsville Lions Club Bluegrass Festival in Log Town, 11-6 p.m. Free admission, but donations cheerfully accepted. Bleacher seating will be available, but festival-goers may bring their own lawn chairs. The Lions Club will have a variety of food available for purchase including barbecue, hamburgers, hot dogs, funnel cakes, drinks and more. All events are free and open to the public unless otherwise noted.
